2017 truly has been an incredible year for me, personally and as a photographer. I’ve even had the two worlds meld together through my work with the National Down Syndrome Society and at weddings of two of my high school classmates. I’ve seen past couples become pregnant and welcome new WZP babies. I’ve journeyed with couples who are relocating, restarting, refreshing.
I know being a part of someone’s love story really is an honor and a privilege. Recreating their wedding day for them to remember always through images is not something I take lightly. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have a bit of fun along the way.
It’s inevitable to have a few shots from my second shooters as they test their light for a particular area of a venue. You could definitely just stand still and let them click the shutter a few times. Or, you could throw in a little dance or a funny face.
I need to shout out my amazing second shooters this year. If they weren’t a treasured friend before we photographed together, they definitely became one after witnessing my need for a snack every 90 minutes, observing my “awesome” dance moves and hearing me ramble random things under my breath while tapping the FitBit for a time check.
Thank you, so much, for taking care of my clients and taking care of me. (And for capturing some beautiful moments along the way).

A primary photographer is only as strong as the woman on her team, keeping grooms hidden from brides, holding veils, organizing family formals, providing water and a little bit of sanity, too.
Speaking of second shooters — if a couple has a photo booth and we don’t use it, is it really even there?
Among my many talents, I have an impressive ability to be whisked onto the dance floor, at least once, and twirled by a guest while I simultaneously attempt to look cool, keep my cameras safe and not trip over my own feet.
Ah, sparklers.
They are beautiful, don’t get me wrong.
It’s just that I don’t really like fire to begin with — and I might have some reservations about sometimes-intoxicated wedding guests playing with large sticks alight with flames… as I walk back and forth among them. I used to think I kept this concern and fear hidden really well behind a poker face… but, apparently not.
On a wedding day, I’m never “just” a photographer. And I love that. I’m not afraid to give control to my second shooter for a moment so that I can carry, lift, assist, button, pick up, put down, talk to, listen or do whatever else is needed of me. I’m a helper by nature — I love to help. And so, serving in any way on this huge important day is a blessing to me.
I’ll happily carry and admire your flowers, pin on boutonnieres or locate missing centerpieces. I’ve been known to button the back of your dress and help you with your heels. I’ve wiped so many happy and nervous teardrops and have given and received the most beautiful hugs.
2017 also featured The Great Bee Attack at Deerfield, captured brilliantly by my second shooter as my kind groom bravely tackled the flying demon that flew into my ponytail as we were doing portraits outside.
Still pondering my decision not to pursue modeling? Yep, I’ve got more for you to think on:
It’s been an unforgettable year. I’ve learned a lot and I’ve already begun tweaking and planning for 2018’s love stories. Thank you for the moments that made up this beautiful 2017. Thank you for the moments to come in 2018.
Wishing you joy, happiness, love, adventure and beauty.
