I first met Kayla Schadegg earlier this year at an event with the National Down Syndrome Society. When I first saw her, she was decked out in a dress and a tiara and I soon learned she was Mrs. Maryland.
It was only later at another NDSS event that I realized Kayla was the proud and loving momma to Kerrigan, 3, who has an extra chromosome and an extra-big smile.
Kerrigan is such a huge reason behind so much of what Kayla does, including her work with and platform for Mrs. Maryland. Her motto is “strongoverwrong” and she shares her message of hope and advocacy whereever she goes.
After sending her some photos from the Buddy Walk event in New York City in September, Kayla asked me if I would capture her time at the Baltimore Buddy Walk in October.
I loved the opportunity to witness not just Kayla and her loved ones, all forming part of “Kerrigans Krew”, but also to be a part of two different large-city Buddy Walk events in one year.
Kayla was the emcee of the event and not only started the official walk but also introduced Baltimore’s mayor and special guest speakers and handed out awards to the top teams and individual fundraisers.
She does everything with passion and excitement and it has been so amazing to see and understand Kayla in all of her many hats.
Be sure to cheer her on. Enjoy these peeks into this fun day!
